To install these applications, just access the iTunes App Store from your iPhone, search for the application name, and then tap on the “install” button to begin installing the application to your iPhone.

Checklist – this is a simple application that lets you note down important and unimportant tasks. It offers a clean and intuitive interface.

reQall – another simple application that reminds you about what you need to remember. Allows text, voice, IM, email or calendar entry reminders. Useful for creating to-do lists, shopping lists and visual reminders.

Zenbi List – Another great to-do application which even lets you share with other iPhone users. You can also edit your lists from your PC’s web browser aside from your iPhone.

Funambol – keeps your contacts synchronized with your address books, offering a better user interface and feedback mechanism than what comes as standard with the iPhone.

TouchCalc – although the iPhone and iPod Touch comes with a built-in calculator, TouchCalc offers advanced functions such as scientific mode, bit/integer mode and statistics mode. Suits the needs of students.

SugarSync – lets you synchronize your iPhone with your PCs or Macs, providing instant access to your PC files. The best part is is that any changes you make to your files on your desktops, are quickly reflected when you access them remotely using your iPhone.

EasyTask Manager – a good GTD application that also offers synchronization feature between your iPhone and multiple computers. It features an easy-to-use and simple interface.

LockBox – Yes, we all need a nifty application like this for storing sensitive information. This application lets you store sensitive credit card details, bank accounts passwords and other information that we need to remember and at the same time protect from other people. The application provides encryption technology through a user-specific secret code.

Cards – For users who maintain multiple credit cards or bank cards in their wallet, this application will definitely be useful. It lets you store credit card information in an AES-256 bit encryption.

Klick – A useful app for Flickr fans and users, lets you connect yo your Flickr account to share photos, browse contacts’ photos,  and even locate photos near your location on a map.

eReader - If you don’t want to fork out cash for an Amazon Kindle, this application could be the next best thing. The new version lets you go to a specific page, change font sizes, and includes a back button for links, among other useful navigation features.

IM+ - Although there are other good IM applications for the iPhone, IM+ is definitely  my choice because of its simple and clean interface and integration with major IM clients including, Yahoo, MSN, Google, MySpace, Jabber, ICQ, iChat, and AIM.

Tumble – Tumblr users would definitely hate us if we don’t include their iPhone applications on this list. But even without that threat, we can still say that Tumble is indeed a pretty useful application. It offers five ways to post on your Tumblr account, via Text, Photo, Quote, Link and Chat.

LifeCast - Everybody seems to be into web-based lifecasting today, so it is natural that the iPhone also has its own lifecasting application. This app lets you create multiple lifecasts, as well connect multiple blogs to your account.

InstaPaper – This app lets you save web pages for reading later on. This would definitely be useful for iPhone users who don’t want to minimise data carrier costs when browsing the web using their iPhone.

WordPress – A robust and yet simple app for updating your WordPress-powered blogs, whether for creating a new post or editing one that’s already been published.

SodaSnap Postcards – Lets you create electronic postcards from snapshots you take using your iPhone’s camera. You can also tag these postcards before sharing them with your iPhone contacts.

TapTap Revenge – Yes this is a game, but hey, who says a mobile game can’t be useful? Tap Tap Revenge would certainly be of use while killing time, waiting for a bus ride, or when waiting for a meeting. A bit of caution though, don’t play this game before going to bed. Chances are you won’t go to bed until very late.

Instamapper GPS Tracker – Offers free real-time location tracking, location-sharing and recording of “tracks” for later analysis. Lets you track your iPhone on Google Maps,  allowing you to record 100,000 positions.

Shozu - Supporting 40 social networking and online content sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Blogger and many more, Shozu lets you stay connected with all your online contacts from the convenience of your iPhone. You can post photos, read and reply to comments, update your status and much more.

Fast Contacts – If you find the iPhone’s default Contacts utility a tad boring, then you might want to consider installing this app. Touted as Contacts on steroids, it lets you organize your iPhone contacts in ways that you never imagined could be possible.

LinkedIn - The king of business social networking, LinkedIn, heeded the call of the iPhone and released this app. You can do many of the things you can do the web-based LinkedIn , on this app for your iPhone.

Exposure - This is one of the first applications I installed in my iPhone. It gives you access to your Flickr account via your iPhone. You can pretty much do the same things that you can in your web-based Flickr account.

miGhtyDocs - A little application that caches your Google documents to your iPhone’s memory so you can read them even if you are not connected to the internet.

Bookmarks - Another simple, yet usefiul application for those who are still using Delicious bookmarks. It lets you access those bookmarks from your iPhone.

Evernote – This has been one of the most hyped iPhone apps. The idea behind Evernote is that it allows you capture, store and search information (ie make notes) easily using a variety of devices. It’s definitely a great application for remembering practically everything that needs to be remembered.

Personal Assistant – Lets you manage all your personal accounts, from Bloomberg, American Express, Chase, Citibank, Bank of America and many more. Features a leek-looking interface, real logos representing all supported accounts.

NY Traffic Cam – Lets you access hundreds of live traffic cameras in New York. Definitely a great application to have if you live in New York or have plans of doing business there.

TypePad - Another useful blogging application for the iPhone if you maintain a TypePad-hosted blog. It lets you create new blog posts, post photos and update your friends through the iPhone whenever you update your TypePad blog.

Upcoming – Helps you remember your contacts birthdays and hence enables you to greet them on their special day.,not a belated or advance greeting, but a greeting on the exact birthday.

Tanja SOS Flashlight – Allows you to use your iPhone as a flashlight, or to blink an SOS signal. Yes, we know it’s a ridiculous idea to use the iPhone for flashing SOS signals, but heck, you never know when it might come in handy.

iChoose - How many times have we been indecisive about making a decision? iChoose helps you make a decision especially in situations when right or wrong is of equal weight. It’s the modern day equivalent of tossing a coin or rolling a dice to arrive at a decision.

TwitterVision - One of several applications that bring the Twitter experience to the iPhone. This one however offers a unique and fun way of looking at Twitter posts through Twitter’s public timeline, via geo-maps. From the maps of Twitter posts, you can follow a link and a Twitter member by simply tapping on the links.

Bloomberg – This application may not ne one of those that gets too much publicity, but that doesn’t mean that it is not a useful application. On the contrary it is one of the most useful and even one of the best applications for the iPhone. The feeds keep you up-to-date with business news, including stock reports.

New York Times – Next to Bloomberg, NYT’s iPhone application is one of the most useful sources of up-to-date news and information on your iPhone. It lets you access the latest news and photos, customise your news category display, and read articles even when you are offline.

BookSearch – Here’s another underated iPhone application. It’s is a very usefu search application that lets you search for book information, and also allows you to order books online from CampusBooks4less.

AIM - AOL’s famous instant messaging has also made it to the iPhone as a native app. If you’re a die-hard AIM user, you would definitely want to install this feature-rich application onto your iPhone.

Facebook – This app allows you to take your Facebook world with you when you’re out and about. Described by some as one of the best free apps available for the iPhone, Facebook fans won’t be disappointed.

MySpace – Like the Facebook equivalent, this app allows MySpace fans to stay connected with their MySpace friends when they’re out and about. A must have app for MySpace fans.

Twitterific - If not for the occasional ads that appear when you are using it, this application is the next best thing to the web-version of Twitter. Allows you to both read and publish posts or “tweets” to the Twitter community website.

Unfortunately, the process is entirely overwhelming for the average iPhone user. The bulk of consumers use iTunes’ Top and front page listings. Since placement on the top lists is derived entirely from unit sales, there is a disturbing skew towards the $.99 applications. This not only discourages big developers from putting high budgets and serious resources towards development of really useful applications and games, but also does a disservice to us, as iPhone users. If all we see are ninety-nine cent gimmicks and toys, how will we realize the true potential of our device? Apple attempts to offset this with editor’s picks, but this simply isn’t enough to make sense of the App Store.

There are new third party services and tools coming onto the scene to help show how to best navigate the App Store. We’re often asked if we are overwhelmed with the number of applications currently released and the number we are capable of covering. There are a massive number of clones, one-off gimmicks, volumes of books and reference material, and a never-ending supply of uninteresting games. We prefer Cell Minute Tracker to AT&T’s minute tracker any day. Much simpler, easy to navigate and much faster.

Edit Word and Excel documents on the go.

15. Photogene
There are a multitude of photo editing apps out there, but you really only need one. Crop, rotate, adjust colors, and add filters with Photogene. (Similar: Camera Bag)

16. Skype
Superb quality Skype-to-Skype over WiFi using the Skype application. Finally be free of your computer and microphone to make those long distance calls. (Similar: Truphone)

17. Kindle
Skeptical at first, but found eBook reader surprisingly easy on the eyes and good for taking in a quick chapter. Offers plenty of free content, but won’t be replacing your physical Kindle.

18. Beejive IM 3.0
We mentioned this on last year’s roundup, but it deems reiteration. So far, the best multi-IM service client on the iPhone, now with Push Notification. AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and more.

Extremely reluctant to include this on the list, but it does deserve a bottom slot. Scan UPC codes for price comparisons on the go, but wait for an update for improved scanning and database.

20. Real Racing
Standard track based racing game, but has the best graphics on an iPhone game to-date. Worth it alone to see what the iPhone is capable of.

21. Sims 3
Slightly watered down Sims 3, but still an excellent version on the go. Fantastic graphics and runs well.

22. My Brute
Create a fighter and compete in daily arena matches. Very simplistic, but highly addicting and will bring you back daily.

23. Mecho Wars
Advanced Wars for your iPhone and iPod Touch, enough said. Interesting art style and background story.

Want free Apps for your iphone, follow this tutorial and learn how. I am not responsible for any damage you may cause to your phone in following this process. I am using iphone 2.2.1 Jailbroken phone. Remember to backup the MobileInstallation.framework folder. I had some problems with this process on my brothers iPhone, it froze on the Apple logo. If you get this problem just load back the file you backed up, also before you try this process make sure you have SSH installed and activated.

If you want to get free apps for the iPhone or iPod Touch, you must first have your iPhone or iPod Touch jailbroken. After that, simply get on Cydia and add the Hackulous repository;

Cydia -> Manage -> Sources -> Edit -> Add

Enter the link “http://cydia.hackulo.us” like the picture below.

After adding the source for the Hackulous repository to cydia, the next step is to download the Installous app for the iPhone or iPod Touch. The Installous app will be your source for apps.

Cydia -> manage -> Packages

From there whether you want to perform a search function or just scroll down and find it, you will have to install the Installous app. The Installous app will be like an alternative to the iPhone app store.

Once the Installous app is on your springboard, you can use it to find the many apps that are available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The app will often redirect you to hosting sites via the browser but from there just simply select a mirror and you should be able to enjoy the apps free. We’re proud of our new website design that has been painstakingly developed for BoxedArt.com. We’ve poured months into the design, content, and programming in order to re-launch the best possible service, and now we’re showing the secrets of how all of the eye candy was made. So without further ado, here is a step by step guide on how our shiny new layout was developed in Photoshop.

Alright, let’s start with design…

THE BACKGROUND

Step 1: Create a Palette
First, open up Photoshop and start a new project. You can do this by clicking File>New or by pressing CTRL-N. We’ve chosen a normal canvas size for the web, 1000×900, however, this setting can be increased at a later time.

Step 2: Apply a Gradient
Now that the canvas in set up, it’s time to start the background of the design. To do this, make a new layer on the “layer palette” or press CTRL+SHIFT+N. Then fill the layer with the gradient from right to left with foreground color #edd8af and background color #ede4c9. This color is used to represent the color of the box.

Step 3: Add a Texture

The BoxedArt background is designed to look like a cardboard box. To make this box texture effect, make another new layer and fill it with the color #bcb6a9. Next, apply a film grain filter following the setting below. Then, to make a rougher look, apply a Gaussian blur to the texture.

THE HEADER

Step 4: Tape Effect Navigation Bar
For the top navigation section we placed a piece of tape across the top. We have seen tape used on many websites, however we used it a bit differently here. Rather than have the tape holding something in place on the website, (which is also done later on), this piece of tape is holding the cardboard package closed. Because the BoxedArt design was developed to look like a box that has been sent through the mail, this was the perfect effect to use for a navigation bar. To create this navigation bar, we started with a photo of a piece of tape, downloaded from bigstockphotos.com, and stretched it across the top area by using the transform tool, Edit > Transform or CTRL-T. Next, to make the transparent effect, weset the layer properties to linear burn. Below are the results:

Step 5 – Old Worn Stamp Navigation Buttons
Staying with the box theme, we made the navigation buttons look like old, worn-out, mailed stamps. To do this, we started with an old stamp photo (also downloaded from bigstockphoto) as a guide. After the photo is downloaded, the first step is to path out the stamp, extract it out from the background, and duplicate the stamp layer to a new layer. After the stamp is pathed out without the background, there is still an existing image on the face of the stamp. To cover the image on the face of the stamp, we took an image of old yellowed paper and pasted it, which also added a nice texture.

Next, we wanted to add some color to the navigation buttons to make them pop and to separate the various categories of the website. To do this, we placed color boxes on each stamp, with a decorative border around each box. After you have created the color box, we set the properties of the layer to linear burn so that the color blends in to the old stamp. Then, we added another new layer with a black and white background from top to bottom. After that, we added the film grain to the layer with the below settings. Finally, we again changed the layer properties to overlay, set and the opacity to 60%.

Step 6 – Apply the Navigation Buttons to the Navigation Bar

Now that we have created the stamp buttons in various colors, it is time complete some final preparations and finally to apply these buttons to the top website navigation. We gave each navigation button some hand drawn character by applying an icon set called Sketchy icons by ~mathilde. They are applied by placing the icon on top of the colored box layer, and aligning the icon on the center. The same processs is used to apply each icon to each stamp.

Next, use transform (CTRL-T) on each of the stamps and turn them in different direction to give them a “slapped on” look. After that, switch to the text tool and use a handwritten font for the text next to each category. Here, we used the font of “Loved by the King”. Finally the top navigation bar is done.

Step 7 – Starting the Top Introduction Area
Blocking out the top of the introduction area is one of the simplier steps. First, create a new layer (CTRL+SHIFT+N), and then select with the Rectangular Marquee Tool in the tool box. Now, create a rectangle box across the page, and use the fill tool to fill the box with white color. This area will serve as a white piece of paper that is taped up onto the design.

Now that you have the white paper done, make another new layer below the white paper layer and fill it with black; this is to make the shadow of the paper. once you have done so, go to filter>blur>Gaussian blur with a radius of 6.5. After this, set the opacity of the layer to 20% and move it right by 5 pixels. Then, add the main text, in this case, the phrase “Simplify and Save” was used, on the top area above the paper.

Now you can see there’s a shadow behind the paper, but the paper don’t just stick there, so to hold it up we add some scotch tape on one side, as shown earlier on the tutorial, and on the other side, we will use a post it note for balance. Once you have the paper done, fill it up with some text in a handwritten font, so it looks as though a note has been taped onto the package. Finally, highlight all layers and click CTRL-T to turn it to -1.5 degrees, to give it a more realistic taped on look like the shipping label on a box.

Step 8 – Sticking on a Post-it Note

We used a post it note on the design to separate the space with the description of our website’s benefits from the sign up information. It also went great with the box theme, as if the note was applied by the post office upon delivery of the package. To design the post-it note, make another new layer (CTRL+SHIFT+N) and then pick up the pen tool. Using the pen tool, draw a square with curve corners similar to the below screen shot.

Once you are done drawing it, go to the path palette, hold ctrl, and click on the word path layer. Then you can see the box that you drew turn into the selection. After this, just fill it with the foreground color #fffb78 and background #fffcd1, and pull it from the top left corner to bottom right corner. You will be left with a familar yellow colored post-it looking shape

Step 9
Now, we again need to add a shadow to add depth to the paper. Therefore, another new layer (CTRL+SHIFT+N) is needed below the yellow post-it-note. The process is the same as used on the white paper, but set the opacity to 40%. You will also need to transfom the shadow to create a skew, and pull it out slightly just like the diagram below.

Step 10 – Filling in the Post-it Note
Next, add in the text you want on the post-it-note. On our note, we added a few join now/shop now buttons. To make similar buttons, you first draw a box and fill it with a green border. Then, add a mask on it, and use the grudge brushes. Next, mask out part of the box to make the line look broken up, which is how we achieved out stamp effect.

And this is how it looks like finally.

THE BODY

Step 11 – Curled Masking Tape Header Bars
Now, let’s move to the content area of the body. In this design, we have 2 columns of content, and a lot of little icons. We used several existing icon sources because we liked the hand drawn look of them, including Handy Icons and Sketchy icons. At the start of the body section, we have a header bar, which lists the name of a section of the website. To stay with the box theme, we made this header bar look like a strip of curled masking tape. As with the scotch tape, the masking tape also starts with a stock photo from bigstockphoto. We then increased the length of the tape using the Rectangular Marquee Tool by selecting part of the tape and duplicating it to the left to make I longer. To do this, simply select the area to duplicate, select up the Move tool, click on the selection by holding the ALT+SHIFT keys without letting go, and then pull it to the right to make longer. To avoid the seams, just use the stamping tool to touch up the seam. Check out the preview below.

Step 12 – Little Buttons Beneath the Previews

The content area of BoxedArt contains several previews of website templates with little buttons beneath them. For the buttons below the previews, just pick up the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a small rectangle, and fill it with color #123057. For the lighter buttons, just duplicate the first layer, move it under the first button, and set the layer opacity lighter; here it is set to 40%. Repeat the same process for additional buttons.

Step 13 – Using Dashed Seams to Separate the sections

To separate the main categories, a simple effect was used to give the look of seams imprinted across the box. To create these, just draw dashed lines using the text tool and turn it 90 degree. Then, set the layer properties to Overlay. To make it darker look, just duplicate the layer; use 2 to 3 layers depending on how dark you would like the seams.

Step 14 – Filling in Additional Content

Adding the rest of the content was pretty easy. We simply used the line tool to draw lines to separate each category and added in the text and icons as necessary. We also used a nice clean font, Helvetica Condensed, for the category titles. Below is a view of how the body looks as a whole:

Step 15 – Bottom Ad Placement

Now we have reached the part where the ads are. Here, tape was again used for the background, using a pre-existing image as a starting point. Next, the Rounded Rectangular Tool is selected with the foreground set to white and a the radius of 5px. We then draw along rounded rectangle across the tape, and after that, another few more rounded small rectangles inside the white rounded retangle with a light grey background (color #f8f7f3), and with a darker grey border. You can set the border under the layer properties, just double click on the layer and set it accordingly.

Now let’s add the title and the ads in to each boxes. And here’s the final result of the partner row:

Step 16 – The Announcement Section

The announcement section uses the familar masking tape header bar, as well as a section for newsletter subscriptions that looks like a sticky piece of paper. First, we added thick tape for the title using he same steps for the tape header bar in the body section. As for the content, it is pretty easy, just add in the lines to separate the columns. Next, for the subscription area, pick up the rectangular marquee tool and draw a small box at the right hand corner, then fill it with color #f9e5a6. Once you have done that, press CTRL-D to deselect the selection, and pick up the burn tool, set the brush size to 35 pixels and burn the corner of the brown box just like the below example.

Finally, set the opacity of the layer to 60% and add in the drop shadow by double clicking on the layer with the brown box, and alter the setting as below. Later on, just add in the content in the area.

Here’s the final result after all content is in. Pretty cool huh?

THE FOOTER

Step 17 – The Footer
Here, we are reaching the last part of the design, the footer. Designing a nice clean footer is also easier than it appears. Firstly again we use the rectangular marquee tool, and select a long rectanle across the page, filling it with color #462d0f. Then, take the line tool and draw a line with the color #a05d18.

For the footer category part, again we draw a big rectangle, fill it with color #472a0b, and set the layer properties to 78%. Then, create another new layer and create another rectangle the same size as the layer, fill it with color #fffcd1. Next, add some film grain effect matching the settings below. Finally, set the opacity of the layer to 30%, and the properties to multiply.

After you are done with all the setting, this is what it looks like:

Lastly, for the final colored strip on the bottom of the footer, repeat the above steps that were used for the top footer, or just duplicate the layer and move it to the bottom. Then you can just add in the content for the footer. Look at this preview to get an idea of the above. Enjoy learning.

Apart from being a mood depressant, alcohol is an immune suppressant that can actually decrease your resistance to viral infections like swine flu. So stay away from alcoholic drinks so that your immune system may be strong.

7. Be physically active

Moderate exercise can support the immune system by increasing circulation and oxygenating the body. For example brisk walking for 30-40 minutes 3-4 times a week will significantly perk up your immunity.

8. Keep away from sick people

Flu virus spreads when particles dispersed into the air through a cough or sneeze reach someone else’s nose. So if you have to be around someone who is sick, try to stay a few feet away from them and especially, avoid physical contact.

9. Know when to get help

Consult your doctor if you have a cough and fever and follow their instructions, including taking medicine as prescribed.

10. Avoid crowded areas

Try to avoid unnecessary trips outside. Moreover, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

These instructions will work with the latest 3.1.2 firmware, the 05.11.07 baseband, and iPhones which require hactivation. If you have already jailbroken following these instructions to unlock will be easier.

For those with a new iPhone 3GS (updated Bootrom), BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This means that once jailbroken you should not let your battery die. If it does die you will need to reconnect it to the computer and use BlackRa1n to boot it.

Before continuing make sure you are on the 05.11.07 baseband by following this tutorial. If you are not please update your firmware to 3.1.2 using iTunes before continuing.

Step One
Open your web browser of choice and navigate to http://www.blackra1n.com. Click the Windows logo at the bottom of the screen.

Step Two
When prompted save the download to your desktop

Step Three
Then double click the blackra1n executable file from the desktop to launch the program

Step Four
Make sure your iPhone or iPod is connected to the computer then click the large make it ra1n button

Step Five
You iPhone will now be placed in recovery mode.

You will see a picture of GeoHot that replaces the regular recovery mode screen on your device.

blackra1n will run and then your device will reboot.

A popup message will appear informing you that BlackRa1n is free software and if you appreciate it you can donate to GeoHot at geohot@gmail.com.

Step Six
Once your device reboots it will be jailbroken and you will notice a blackra1n icon on the Springboard. Make sure you have an internet connection and press to launch the application.

Choose the installer application of your choice then press to select sn0w if you would like to unlock your device. Press the Install button at the top right of the screen to begin.

BlackRa1n will begin to download and install the package you selected.

If you chose to unlock device using blacksn0w you will be presented with a Post Install log for sn0w. CommCenter will be restarted and there is no need to reboot. If your carrier doesn’t support 3G then disable it. Press the Close button to continue.

Step Seven
Once complete BlackRa1n will respring your iPhone and you will find the installer package of your choice on the Springboard.

Step Eight
Once you have confirmed your installer package is working correctly you may use the Uninstall blackra1n button inside the BlackRa1n app to remove it from your springboard.

So lets get started, i just wanted to note that you should preserve your baseband already if you want to successfully unlock again. So check, do you have the old baseband? starting from 4 not 5. If it does start from 5 then you are screwed until someone figures out a new way of unlocking with the different baseband.

My iPhone experience

I was going to wait until my birthday in Jan but the girlfriend gave the go ahead to get my new Iphone 3GS as she was going to buy me one. But as she found out, i wont be able to unlock it with my own carrier, as of the jailbreak resistant iphones being released.

She forced me to go and buy it with her (who can say NO to that cute face). So we went to the apple store and brought an iphone and one of the idiots there told me that it was a 3.0 firmware so i could unlock and jailbreak without the baseband being unlockable. So i took it home and unpacked and checked. (!*$%*&^$) Suprise, it was a 3.1.2 SDK and no unlock or jailbreak and no way was i going to pay for another contract with O2 (rip off).

I got in contact with an old friend, and we made a deal with his unopened iphone. £400 with 3.0 firmware and it costed me £120 less than the normal price for a unopened iphone 3gs. Unlocked and jailbroken with the Three!!!!!! and i got a max internet addon with three which enable my 3G

My Iphone 3Gs Review

The first thing I noticed was the overall speed. Thanks to its 600MHz processor, everything is much snappier — boot up, app launches, keyboard typing. Here’s one example. Google Earth takes 23 seconds to load on the older 3G over WiFi, but loads in just 5 seconds on the 3G S — that’s more than 4x faster. Apple claims 2x speed gains. Well, Apple is right on track with the speed of the new iPhone 3gs.

One of the major improvement on the iPhone 3GS is the loading time for applications. In my own experience and in independent tests, applications have loaded faster on the iPhone 3GS when compared to older models. The additional memory that was added to the 3GS and the extra CPU clock speed make a big difference.

Current iPhone users have a tougher decision ahead. First they must ask themselves if the features offered exclusively on the phone (as opposed to the free upgrade, which they should download immediately) are worth the expense of a new phone. For some users, Voice Control, the new camera, and the speed boost will be worth the cost. For others, it won’t be a huge sacrifice to go without.

I found it worked well most times, though sometimes wandered in complex scenes like reflective windows. The video camera is surprisingly smooth and fluid. It shoots VGA video (640 x 480) at 30 frames a second, though the frame rate sometimes dropped to 25fps. Not HD by any means, but perfectly adequate for my purposes.

There’s clearly a lot of use for something like this when driving or working on something which keeps your hands away from your phone, though you still have to engage the app physically, so we’re not sure how much you’d get out of it in those situations. The whole concept seems something very much in the vein of Cover Flow — a really impressive component for the phone that just doesn’t have a ton of practical use. Yes, your friends will think it’s pretty cool, but as a pragmatic group of gadget nerds, we don’t see a tremendous need for this functionality.

Here is the most important part of this review.  If you are coming from a different phone, then I would switch to the iPhone. Many say the iPhone is overrated, many say the iPhone is a child’s toy, but Apple is moving in the right direction. It is working around the consumer, and more and more the business area.

The iPhone 3G S isn’t perfect — and to be honest is far from perfect, but that perfect phone doesn’t exist and probably never will. When I don’t have my iPhone and have to use a different phone temporarily, it really is difficult. I’m so used to having GPS, and easy texting, and all my music if I needed something to listen to. It’s like I’ve grown accustomed to the iPhone. Just understand though this model still lacks things like MMS (for America), voice navigation, background applications, a front facing camera, e-mail body searching, text message searching, haptic feedback… I could go on.

Overall, I’m pleased with the iPhone 3G S, and like I’ve always said, Apple is moving in the right direction.
